The GMAP palaeogeographic reconstruction program of Torsvik and Smethurst
We do not accept responsibility for any problems which may result from the installation of GMAP on your computer. Proceed at your own risk!

A revised version of the GMAP program is now available free of charge from this web site. The new version can read the ASCII pole lists produced by the PALEOPOLE QUERY. GMAP is a PC program designed to run under Windows95 and Windows NT. The program will not function under earlier operating systems.

To install the new version of GMAP:

  1. Download the GMAP program file
  2. Run the GMAP program file. The installation procedure will begin automatically
  3. Decompress files to a temporary folder (e.g. C:\TEMP)
  4. During Setup, install GMAP to the suggested folder, or choose your own (e.g. C:\GMAP)

Notes

  1. If asked, choose to OVERWRITE existing files. Do NOT cancel Setup. When asked if you are sure, answer Yes. READ THE MESSAGES FROM THE SETUP PROGRAM CAREFULLY.
  2. If system files are replaced the computer may need to re-boot. If so, begin again at step 2 above

To use GMAP together with this web site:

  1. Use PALEOPOLE QUERY to create a subset of the Global Palaeomagnetic Database. An ASCII file containing the resulting pole list is created automatically
  2. Download the ASCII file using the link provided in the Paleopole Query result table
  3. Start GMAP
  4. From the "VGP" menu, select "Open VGP" and select the ASCII text file
